Pre-MOT Course Who Is This Product For?

 To be able to become a MOT Tester, a technician needs to have four years’ experience and a Level 3 qualification. This product is for Motor Vehicle Technicians who have the experience required to work competently but do not hold a qualification/accreditation scheme to prove it.

What does this product aim to do? 

Address the lack of recognition of current competence which doesn’t allow technicians without a qualification to progress in their careers and become a MOT Tester. Technicians’ competence is benchmarked against National Occupational Standards regarding the following systems:  Brakes  Suspension  Steering  Wheels and tyres  Emissions  Electrics  Body/Chassis.

What opportunities for progression are there?

Successful learners will be able to progress into City & Guilds (3428-02) Level 2 Award in MOT Testing to become MOT

MOT Qualifications and Training:

Level-3 Pre-Vehicle Testing Assessment (3428-01)

  • Who is this product for?

Level 2 - MOT Testing (3428-02)

  • Who is the qualification for?

    Anyone who wants to become a qualified MOT tester will be required to successfully complete this qualification.

  • What does the qualification cover?

    This Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) approved qualification covers safe working practices and working relationships in vehicle testing centres, managing your own professional development, carrying out pre-checks and carrying out a full vehicle test.

  • What opportunities for progression are there?

    Individuals can progress to the Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management (3428-03).

  • Who did we develop the qualification with?

    This qualification was developed with the Driver and Vehicle Standard’s Agency (DVSA).


  • Learner entry requirements

Level 3 - MOT Test Centre Management (3428-03)

  • Who is the qualification for?

    It is aimed at current MOT Test Centre Managers who wish to have their skills and experience recognised or for approved MOT Testers who wish to move into MOT Test Centre Management.

  • What does the qualification cover?

     This Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) approved qualification covers managing legislative and compliance requirements of a vehicle test centre, managing the service offered to customers, developing staff and how to manage Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) test centre quality audits.

  • What opportunities for progression are there?

    Qualified MOT Test Centre Managers can complete further management qualifications with City & Guilds or the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) to further develop their skills.

  • Who did we develop the qualification with?

    This qualification was developed with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

  • Learner entry requirements:

    There are no entry requirements for these qualifications. However, centres must ensure that candidates have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualifications successfully.
